Troop 114 is 100% Scout Led

Empowering scouts to be leaders is the core of Scouting.  Scouts learn by doing, and what they do is lead their patrols and troop.  The scouts themselves develop the Troop program, then take responsibility for figuring out how they will achieve the goals.  Only through real hands-on experience as leaders can scouts learn to lead.

We are scout led because:

  • Kids get the chance to learn critical planning skills

  • Kids learn to lead in a safe environment

  • Kids learn from mistakes

  • Kids learn to lead others, and work in teams

  • Kids learn respect when treated with respect

  • Kids have the chance to see excellent role models in action

Troop 114 has been scout-led for 40+ years.  The Troop is run by the Senior Patrol Leader, who is elected by the scouts every six months.  Scouts are broken into smaller groups called patrols, led by scout elected patrol leaders.  All activities are supervised by the Scoutmaster and Troop Parent Committee to ensure safety but every effort is made to leave the Scouts in charge.

"When you want a thing done, 'Don’t do it yourself', is a good motto for Scoutmasters.  The more responsibility the Scoutmaster gives the scouts, the more they will respond."   Lord Baden-Powell (founder of Scouting)
